Legacy Trail
Introduction
Longfellow Creek is a four-mile long stream located in West Seattle's Delridge and Westwood neighborhoods. Beginning with the headwaters in Roxhill Park, it flows north through the Delridge Valley and empties into the West Waterway of the Duwamish River, flowing into Elliot Bay and then into Puget Sound. The Creek flows through public and private property, and in some places flows underground through culverts. It is one of Seattle's five major creeks. The City's support of Longfellow Creek is part of Mayor Nickels' Restore Our Waters Initiative.
Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail
A Ribbon of Connection
Longfellow Creek serves as a natural connection between the various communities throughout the Delridge and Westwood neighborhoods. The Legacy Trail provides a walking path from Roxhill Park to SW Yancy St. It focuses attention on the Creek as it winds through public green spaces and links community resources such as the Delridge Library, Community Centers, schools, human services and businesses. Explore this unique educational environment and experience the natural world "up-close and personal!"
Trail Partnerships
Various segments of the the trail were completed as part of several Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) funded by Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle Parks and Recreation and the 2000 Pro-Parks Levy. In 2001, the community was awarded a City of Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund grant to design a proposed route, incorporating the CIP sections and to construct a new portion. Through a series of community design meetings staffed by Pomegranate Center, the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail Route Plan was created. An interdepartmental team of City staff has worked with the community to turn the plan into reality.
