Seattle Works Day - June 9, 2007

Report submitted by Kirsten Rohrbach, Creek Steward

An intrepid crew from Seattle Works joined us at the Thistle Street Green Space for Seattle Works Day on the second Saturday in June. It was wonderful having so many pairs of hands to help out! Three willing volunteers responded to my call for team captains, and the rest of the volunteers sorted themselves into teams. One team removed blackberry roots from the north bank of the drainage in the northeast corner of the green space so that we can finish planting that bank in the fall. Another group removed field bindweed from recent plantings so they wouldn’t be choked by weeds before they could establish themselves. The third team continued weeding and sheet mulching the trail entrance next to where the creek daylights so that we can plant that area in the fall. The weather started out dry but became unseasonably wet for June. Our volunteers were soaked by the end of their community service, and we thank them for sticking to it!
