September 22 Work Party-City Quest/Team Works

Report submitted by Kirsten Rohrbach, Creek Steward

On September 22, two fabulous groups of volunteers joined us at the Thistle Street Green Space. 22 volunteers from Seattle Pacific’s freshmen orientation program, “City Quest,” under the leadership of sophomores Caitlin Giersdorf and Bryan Nguyen showed their spirit. “Not So New to Seattle,” the chosen team name of the Team Works volunteer group, put another work party under their belt and moved up a notch toward their next team name: “Less New to Seattle!” Tom Buford was the team captain for the 14 wonderful volunteers from Team Works. Despite a scarcity of wheelbarrows, both volunteer groups pitched in to achieve the day’s goal of mulching a 250 square foot area in preparation for a youth planting this fall. They showed ingenuity by turning any available container (the glove tote, tarps, manure buckets from the P-patch) into a mulching container to get the job done. In addition to mulching, volunteers removed 10-12 cubic yards of blackberry and other weeds from around native western red cedar and other trees and shrubs in the park.

The Thistle Street Green Space is looking better going into the fall planting season than it has in many years. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteer groups in 2007 for helping to make that happen! We look forward to really making headway on the restoration in the green space during Winter 2007 and in 2008!
