Thistle Site - May 26, 2007 Work Party

Report submitted by Kirsten Rohrbach, Creek Steward

The May work party was a lonely work party of one. Companionship was provided by the P-patchers, who were also holding their monthly work party at the community garden. The P-patchers pitched in by removing weeds from some of the Parks beds along the street frontage---thank you, P-patch volunteers! As I worked in the green space, I reflected on the critical need to recruit volunteers during the months of April and May, when invasive weeds grow by leaps and bounds at the site.

I spent the entire work party (and then some) removing field bindweed from all the new plantings that were put in over the past year and creating small “survival rings” around these plants, where needed. Between April and May, the bindweed had grown from small sprouts protruding from the ground to twisted vines with multiple stems that had climbed up and completely covered small trees and shrubs! I also removed some blackberry resprouts from the plantings on the SW corner. Basically, the work accomplished was maintenance of existing plantings: no headway was made in terms of clearing new ground for fall plantings.
